Session 2 – Portfolio in Digital Art – Summer Art Institute

This intermediate-to-advanced-level major focuses on elevating proficiency to excellence in fine art skills through observation and rendering. Students will develop a unique, dynamic portfolio while expanding on fundamental digital art skills in digital mark-making and working with layers, digital character design, animated expressive and narrative shorts, posters and web graphics, and digital composition. Students will also take one fine art class. Recommended for high school students with introductory experience in digital art.
*Submitting work samples is strongly encouraged but not required. Sharing recent work helps us get to know you, where you are, and how best to help you grow.

All students are asked to bring a bag lunch, a sketchbook (8inx10in preferred), a refillable water bottle, and sunblock in case class projects occur outside. 
Early drop-off available for an additional $25/day (no earlier than 8:30 am)
Late pick-up available for an additional $25/day (no later than 5:15 pm)

Using the tools of drawing, painting, and mixed media, students will experiment with conceptual works to create a body of work that focuses on solidifying a personal vision and voice. This class is ideal for artists looking to make the transition from mostly observation-based works into creating conceptual works with mostly imaginative elements, as well as those heading into senior year with college applications in mind.
*Submitting work samples is strongly encouraged but not required. Sharing recent work helps us get to know you, where you are, and how best to help you grow.

Intermediate Portfolio in Drawing & Painting

Multi-Media Portraiture

Learn how to create compelling portraits across a variety of media, including acrylics, charcoal, pastels, and mixed media. This class will focus on human facial features and proportions, as well as techniques for capturing expressions and gestures. Students will investigate color, light, concept, and narrative, creating a body of work that reflects the artist's personal voice.

Students are required to bring their own sketchbook.

Portfolio in Character Design & Comics

Design and tell your own visual story panel by panel using traditional materials such as bristol board paper, pencils, tracing paper, sable brushes, india ink. Referencing film, video, comic books and comic strips, you will learn how to break down ideas into the "keyframes" in your story. Emphasis will also be placed on the overall look of comic pages within the ‘Elements of Art’ including line quality, shading, variety, emphasis, and perspective.

Students are required to bring their own sketchbook.

Portfolio in the Human Figure

Bring the human form to captivating life through in-depth figure work! In this class, artists will delve into color theory and value to create painted renderings of live nude models. Learn to develop dynamic compositions of figures within an interior space. Students will develop a heightened awareness of color, light, and form. Through working directly from observation, students will gain perspective on the intricacies of representational figurative art.

No class on Sunday 4/9 for Easter Weekend.

Foundations in Figure Drawing

New to figure drawing? In this class, you’ll learn the basics of observational figure drawing, with a focus on grasping the fundamentals of human anatomy and proportion as well as working from general to specific (gestalt theory) to capture lifelike poses and gestures. Students work primarily with charcoal and work with live nude models
