Session 2 – Advanced Drawing & Painting – Summer Art Institute

Advanced Drawing and Painting is the Summer Art Institute’s most comprehensive portfolio track for students with fine art experience and a desire to create a strong portfolio. Classes include Advanced Drawing and Painting, Color and The Human Figure, and Digital Arts and Illustration. 

Working from intricate still lifes, live models, contemporary art elements, and experimental techniques, Advanced Drawing and Painting students will spend three weeks this summer using their artistic knowledge to develop an authentic, mature, and edited fine art portfolio. Students enrolling in this summer program must already have an understanding of formal art techniques, color theory, value, key/tone, and composition. 

Students are asked to bring a sketchbook. All other materials are included.

The Director of Artistic Advancement will request 5-10 work samples after registration to confirm eligibility for this track.

Digital Character & World Building

Students will learn to create a portfolio of their own digital world and the characters who live there in this intensive portfolio class. Learn what makes an interesting and original character and imagined world, learn to take those concepts into programs like Adobe Photoshop and Procreate, and then develop them into completed portfolio ready, concept art. Students are required to bring a sketchbook.

This intensive level course is great for those interested in taking Senior Project in the Fall.

Plein Air

Students will take their skills to the outdoors, learning to markmake from observing the environment around them. Challenging their sense of color, perspective and composition as the day goes through its natural changes. Students will detail landscapes in different locations and create a small compelling portfolio. This class is capped at 8 students.

Students will meet at different locations each week, including 1 longer class for a visit to Storm King Arts Center. After registration families will receive additional forms and information about rain dates.

Portfolio Development

Develop a unique, dynamic portfolio while expanding on your fundamental drawing and painting skills. Primarily working from observation, you will learn to balance life drawing with imaginative and photo based references. Students will create still life drawings and paintings, self portraits, live model portraits and original works of art. This class will prepare students for advanced classes such as Senior Project, live model courses and college applications.

Experimental Sculpture

Learn to take your ideas into the world of 3D in this experimental class! Students will create 3 sculptures using a variety of materials. In this class students will learn how to use materials like clay, Xacto blades, cardboard, aluminum wire and foam to create sculptures of characters and creatures of their own design. Students are required to bring a sketchbook.
