Work With Us! Apply for Summer Arts Camp Staff Positions

The Art Effect is seeking engaging and upbeat Teaching Artists, Counselors, and Counselors-In-Training for our Dutchess and Ulster Arts Camps, located in Poughkeepsie, Red Hook and New Paltz this July-August. Dutchess and Ulster Arts Camps offer a variety of programming that allow children ages 5-10 to imagine, discover, create, and have fun.

Positions Available:

Teaching Artists
Teaching Artists work directly with several groups of around ten children over the course of the day to create visual and media arts projects. Teaching Artists will create lessons plans and supplies lists, coordinate with the Camp Director on implementation and support project management and organization. Half days (4 hours) or full days (8 hours) available. $25/hr.

Counselors
Counselors (age 16 and up) work directly with a single group of around ten children. They are responsible for supervising CITs, supporting Teaching Artists and overseeing morning drop offs and afternoon pickups. Mon-Fri, 8 hours a day, plus about 10 hours for move in and 10 hours for move out. $14/hr.

Counselors-In-Training (C.I.T)
Counselors-In-Training (age 14 and up) help counselors with supervising a group of around ten campers. They will assist with camp preparation and clean up, and create a supportive camp community. Mon-Fri, 8 hours a day. Weekly $100 stipend.

Summer Art Institute (and Junior Art Institute) is coming to the beautiful Poughkeepsie Day School Campus!

The Summer Art Programs are designed to help develop students’ ideas and build skills in the visual and digital arts. Multi-week classes allow young artists ages 11-19 to develop a stunning portfolio this summer.

Summer Art Institute | Ages 14-19

The Summer Art Institute (SAI) is a pre-college art portfolio development program for motivated teens. SAI hosts several college visits throughout the summer, allowing students to talk with admissions representatives and get feedback on their portfolios.

Students may select one of three majors to focus on:

Drawing & Painting Major
Session 1: July 4 – July 22
Session 2: July 25 – August 12

Digital Art & Illustration Major
Session 1: July 4 – July 22
Session 2: July 25 – August 12

Advanced Drawing & Painting Major
Session 1: July 4 – July 22
Session 2: July 25 – August 12


Junior Art Institute | Ages 11-14

The Junior Art Institute (JAI) allows middle school students to take their love of art to the next level. Young artists explore a variety of mediums to help define their creative direction in preparation for more advanced instruction in high school and beyond.

Students may select one of two majors to focus on:

Fine Arts Major
Session 1: July 4 – July 15
Session 2: July 18 – July 29
Session 3: August 1 – August 12

Digital Arts Major
Session 1: July 4 – July 15
Session 2: July 18 – July 29

Claudine Farley will be returning as Director of DAC Poughkeepsie!

Claudine Farley has been an art teacher for 20 years for Beacon City School District, and has been the District Art Department Coordinator for the last 15 years. She teaches a variety of classes at the high school, including Ceramics, Fashion, Studio Art, Drawing and Painting, and has recently developed a Contemporary Art Class with Dia Beacon. The class is the first of its kind, blending a major museum and high school students, exposing the students to a higher level of thinking about the art process. She has worked for The Art Effect for the last 14 years, where she has taught the Junior Art Institute in the summer and younger age groups during the school year. This is her third year as director, and she looks forward to many more years as director of Dutchess Art Camp!

Ulster Arts Camp in New Paltz
For ages 5-10
Creativity thrives as campers explore their artistic abilities, games and play. Enjoy both individual and collaborative art making based on an engaging weekly camp theme. Experienced and friendly staff support hands-on art experimentation with a wide variety of artistic mediums including painting, sculpture, collage, animation, performance, and more. Unique to Ulster Arts Camp, campers adventure into the Dorkey Museum through guided tours gaining museum knowledge and inspiration for their own artistic process. The pieces created at camp will portray original narratives connecting to each campers’ interests and lives.

The Summer Art Institute is designed to help develop students’ ideas and build skills in the visual and digital arts. These intensive multi-week sessions allow young artists ages 11-19 to develop their portfolios. Students can select a major of study to focus on.

Junior Art Institute
For ages 11-14

Learn new skills in drawing, painting, digital art, mixed media and more to turn your ideas into impressive finished work. Supportive instructors guide you on advancing your studio practices and developing a strong art making process to pursue your artistic goals. You will learn the basics of composition, color schemes, proportions, perspective, depth, and more through a combination of observational & conceptual art making.

Students can choose between two majors:

  1. Fine Arts majors focus on introducing studio practices and developing techniques using various paints, pastels, charcoal, ink, and more during most of their day. Fine Arts majors will minor in Digital Art 
  2. Digital Arts Majors learn the foundations of photo manipulation, photography, animation, and digital illustration & painting while exploring different forms of technology and proper equipment usage. Digital Art majors will minor in Fine Art

Summer Art Institute
For ages 14-19

Excel your artistic knowledge, techniques, and studio practices by learning from a supportive and knowledgeable team of Teaching Artists. Share this experience with other like minded individuals who have their sights set on pursuing a career in the arts. Emerge with an impressive portfolio including both digital and fine art that highlight a strengthened understanding of color theory, composition, narrative, creative intention, and more. Create a balance between an observational and conceptual style with a strong focus on how to design pieces to include your personal voice. Develop an advanced artistic vocabulary and receive constructive critique on your work from peers and teaching artists. You will have a hand in curating, hanging, and presenting your sessions’ artwork for the Final Showcase art exhibition where your family and friends are invited to celebrate your work. One of your pieces may be chosen for The Art Effect’s Teen Visions exhibition in September!

Students can choose between three majors:

  1. Drawing & Painting – Intermediate artists ready to begin their journey in portfolio development will receive guidance in what colleges look for in a strong portfolio and how to begin to develop pieces with foundational techniques using various paints, inks, charcoals, pastels, and more. 
  2.  Digital Art & Illustration – Intermediate and advanced digital artists will focus on broadening your knowledge about digital tools, resources, and programs to take your work to the next level. Utilize these skills to create stunning original digital illustrations, paintings, animations, and photo manipulations. 
  3. Advanced Drawing & Painting – Advanced level, dedicated students ready to strengthen their artistic knowledge will dive deeper into advanced artistic techniques, practices, and principals. Expand your skills and portray how you see the world using various paints, ink, charcoals, pastels, and more. Advanced Drawing and Painting students will receive a portfolio review from esteemed colleges and learn about the programs they offer. 

Meet Lauren Hollick, SAI and JAI Director!

This summer, Lauren Hollick is leading a dream team of inspirational staff in our Summer Art Institute and Junior Art Institute as Director!
She is a dedicated Artist, Educator, Program Director, and an alumna of The Art Effect. She has been working in our various programs for eight years, spearheading Dutchess/Ulster Arts Camps, Empire After School Program, Arts for Healing, and our National Art Honor Society. Lauren has lived in the Hudson Valley her whole life and obtained a Bachelors in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz.

Lauren strives to have all programs focus on designing inclusive, positive, & safe environments for all young artists where they can experience a wide variety of mediums and technology through the arts! Register HERE for any of our summer camp programs.
