The Art Effect is currently recruiting for the 2022-2023 school year. The Art Effect’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) Chapter #2242 recognizes 9th-12th grade students of high academic and artistic standing throughout the Hudson Valley. The NAHS encourages students to reach their highest level of professionalism and prepares students for a career in the arts. Members serve their community by designing and painting public murals, raising money for scholarships and local organizations, creating public art projects, participating in community art events, and helping set up student exhibits. ??? ???? ???? ????????? ?? ????? ??? ????? ???? ??? ??? ?????? ?? ??? ???? ???? ?? ???????. Dynamic programming at The Art Effect combines both visual art and media art in immersive, experiential courses that allow children to experience, explore and excel in the arts. Fall 2022 art classes begin September 18 with the exception of Senior Project beginning on September 8.

The Art Effect’s National Art Honor Society Chapter #2242 is excited to partner with The Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary to raise funds for their no-kill shelter. Members will be collecting donations now through June 4, 2021. Donations of $80 or more placed on or before May 28th can choose to receive an original pet portrait in exchange for the donation. Animal portrait artwork will be created by the incredibly skilled young professionals of The Art Effect’s National Art Honor Society, who are eager to create artwork in support of a great cause.
Since the start of the school year, The National Art Honor Society has collected non-perishable food and clothing for Rebuilding of Children & Community families, painted The Trolley Barn Gallery windows this past winter, picked up trash on Pershing Avenue in Poughkeepsie, led an artistic discussion on Chronogram’s Taking it to the Streets virtual event, and are currently designing a virtual Pride Month art exhibition with Dutchess Pride, to name a few of their community projects this year!
Started by the National Art Education Association (NAEA) in 1978, the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) inspires and recognizes 9th – 12th graders who have shown an outstanding ability in art. The NAHS strives to aid members in working toward the attainment of their highest potential in art areas and brings art education to the attention of the school and community.
Chapter #2242 members are selected each semester from nominated high school students at The Art Effect who meet the requirements of excellence in the study and creation of art, a minimum of an 87 weighted GPA, and attendance and participation in our Art Institute, Spark Studios, and/or MADLab programs.
Upcoming projects for the National Art Honor Society include a community Juneteenth celebration from 1:00PM-6:00PM at Mansion Square Park. This is the 7th Annual Juneteenth Event hosted by R.E.A.L. Skills Network to celebrate the end of slavery in the US and commemorate the life of Theodore “Tree” Arrington. Arlington High School student mural designer Mary Haddad and Oakwood Friends School mural artists will also be present to see their Black Lives Matter mural unveiled at The Family Partnership Center at 12:00PM.
The National Honor Society Chapter #2242 strives to help students reach the highest level of professionalism as they begin their pursuit of careers in the arts by volunteering in community service projects, murals, hosting, organizing, and/or participating in community art events, fundraising to support the local community, and creating venues in which students may showcase their work.

The Art Effect is proud to celebrate the achievements of graduating seniors from its MADLab, Spark Studios, and Art Institute programs. Students who completed the Art Institute’s rigorous Senior Project last fall received over $1.5 million in scholarship offers from colleges across the country. They will be attending such noted institutions as Tufts University School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
For many graduating seniors, the transition to college represents the culmination of years of study at The Art Effect, and none more so than those students who participated in Senior Project. As the most intensive program offered at the Art Institute, Senior Project is modeled after a senior thesis college course. It challenges high school seniors to be career-minded and think seriously about their art as they develop a portfolio of artwork around a personal theme. After the twelve-week course, students finish Senior Project with twelve finished works in their portfolio. Mel Audette-Diaz is one of those ambitious students.
“What’s clear is that Mel is a creative, insightful and perceptive young person with great skill and tremendous potential,” states Jordan Sanford, Director of Artistic Advancement at The Art Effect. “Mel used the Senior Project class to dive head first into defining their own unique style and approach to painting. With their determination, curiosity, and willingness to experiment, I am confident that this style will only continue to grow while they attend MICA next year.”
As Mel’s artistic and college advisor, Jordan supported them throughout the application process, from how to develop a strong application and art portfolio to what to do when their scholarship award was not enough. From the beginning of the admission process, MICA was at the top of Mel’s list of colleges. Disappointed with their initial MICA scholarship award, Mel and their mother reached out to Jordan. With Jordan’s guidance on how best to negotiate for scholarships and financial aid, Mel was able to secure additional MICA scholarship funds to make their dream of attending MICA a reality for them and their family.
For decades, The Art Effect’s summer programs, Dutchess Arts Camp, Junior Art Institute (now called Summer Intermediate Arts Program) and Summer Art Institute, have enriched and empowered local youth through art and exploration. The path to achieving scholarship-worthy portfolios starts this summer by honing the skills and interest of students of all ages. It’s never too early to nurture a child’s passion for the arts.
