The Art Effect to Receive $20,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts!

ArtsBridge Student Sketch The Art Effect has been approved for a $20,000 award from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the Art Institute, with a special focus on ArtsBridge, a new program within the Art Institute (piloted for 2 years under the name MAAP). ArtsBridge will engage underserved Poughkeepsie youth in the arts to provide them with training, support, and mentorship to help them succeed in higher education. The Art Effect’s project is among 1,073 projects across America totaling nearly $25 million that were selected during this first round of fiscal year 2021 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects funding category.  “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support this project from The Art Effect,” said Arts Endowment Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “The Art Effect is among the arts organizations across the country that have demonstrated creativity, excellence, and resilience during this very challenging year.” Art Institute Class The Art Institute, a year-long portfolio development and college preparatory program, engages over 200 youth ages 14-19 each year. The Art Effect helps students develop their ideas and master skills in both visual and media arts preparing them for their future college and career paths in the arts. Since 2000, our graduates have been offered over $50 million in merit-based scholarships to the nation’s leading colleges, universities, and art schools”. Says Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt, Executive Director. “Students in our most advanced programs created 153 portfolios this year and thanks to the support of our funders, sponsors, and community we have been able to provide $17,899.50 in financial assistance scholarships to low-income students, increasing access to arts education in our community.” Responding to the need to interrupt the cycle of poverty and educational inequities in Poughkeepsie, ArtsBridge establishes a pathway for students to higher education through the arts. With the generous support of the NEA grant funding and other supporters, ArtsBridge will implement a comprehensive program in 2021. Participants will gain advanced artistic preparatory and portfolio development skills though the Art Institute as well as college readiness training, and emotional support through individual mentorship with a focus being on college scholarships and matriculation. This spring will also feature guest artists, exposing youth to a variety of college and career fields. While programs at The Art Effect took a significant hit due to the pandemic last year, with lots of time, talent, hard work, and creative thinking we continue to offer high-quality arts and college prep courses for young people throughout the Hudson Valley. Spring and summer classes are planned for in-person instruction beginning this month. More information on upcoming classes can be found here thearteffect.org/courses.  For more information on projects included in the Arts Endowment grant announcement, visit arts.gov/news. The Art Effect Launches Home Sick: The First International Juried Exhibition at the Poughkeepsie Trolley Barn

The Art Effect announces the launch of its new international juried exhibition series and pilot youth museum studies program in 2021. Home Sick will be The Art Effect’s inaugural national juried exhibition in its new 3,000-sq-ft gallery at the Poughkeepsie Trolley Barn in the heart of the City of Poughkeepsie. This exciting exhibition will be on display February 25 – April 1, 2021.  Enter Here.

Home Sick will serve as a core component of a pilot program to put youth in the “driver’s seat” leading exhibitions and programming at the Trolley Barn,” says Executive Director Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt. Youth at The Art Effect developed the exhibition theme to invite artists to capture how the concept of being “home sick” can take on multiple meanings in light of a tumultuous year such as 2020.  Curator Mary-Kay Lombino, Deputy Director and Emily Hargroves Fisher ’57 and Richard B. Fisher Curator at The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, will work closely with The Art Effect youth to juror the show made up of submissions from around the world. ”We’re very excited to have youth work alongside established curators like Mary-Kay to co-create high-quality exhibitions and develop the skills needed to pursue careers in the art museum field” noted Fenichel-Hewitt. The Art Effect will build upon Home Sick and this pilot program to present additional youth-led exhibitions in the Trolley Barn throughout 2021. This annual series of exhibitions led by youth will also complement other exhibitions featuring art created by youth.  This unique mix of exhibitions will become a permanent piece of The Art Effect’s portfolio of programs.  The Art Effect welcomes local artists of all ages with various discounts to submit artworks for consideration to be included in the Home Sick exhibition through December 31 at https://bit.ly/home-sick-exhibition

The Art Effect is Making Waves of Change This #GivingTuesday

The Art Effect is Making Waves of Change This #GivingTuesday, joining millions around the world participating in the global generosity movement on December 1, 2020

GivingTuesday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, The Art Effect will launch the #GivingTuesday campaign to raise $20,000 to provide the mentorship and resources young people in Poughkeepsie and the greater Hudson Valley need to stay on a successful path, especially during these unprecedented times. We have always believed in the power our teachers have to instruct students not only in art skills, but also life skills that go beyond the studio.

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. GivingTuesday will kick off the generosity season this year by inspiring people to give back on December 1, 2020, and throughout the year.

At The Art Effect, we believe it’s not just about learning how to make great art — it’s about deepening the bonds that begin in the studio and extend through high school graduation, college attendance, and career success.

Eloisa Morales, a graduate of The Art Effect reflects, “The Art Effect pushes you even farther than you’d think of going. At The Art Effect, everyone knows who you are. Your teachers know you better than you do.”Young people right now are continuing to learn how to cope with the ever-changing world around them while also struggling to stay connected, motivated, and hopeful for the future. The Art Effect continues to empower young people to harness their creative voices as they respond to these unprecedented times. We continue to adapt all our classes and workforce programs to reach more young people, providing them with opportunities to develop creative and workforce skills through the arts, and helping youth get on track for college and career.

The Art Effect is proud to be the largest arts education organization in the Hudson Valley. From Kingston to Newburgh, Poughkeepsie to Hudson, we are dedicated to serving young people through the arts. This #GivingTuesday The Art Effect is launching it’s annual campaign by asking alumni, sponsors, community members, and board members to come together to make everything possible for our youth.

All funds raised will go toward supporting arts education programs for youth in the Hudson Valley to explore, experience and excel in the arts. For more information on the Art Effect’s annual appeal, please visit: thearteffect.org/donate-today Did you know?
