Over the past year, we have seen more youth turn to art — for inspiration, relief, and hope. At The Art Effect, every student, from the youngest artists to the flourishing filmmakers, is learning how to cultivate and share their unique voice with the world. We are inspired by their resilience, strength, and creativity. We need your help to empower young artists as they grapple with the uncertainty related to the pandemic, social injustices, and unemployment in their families and communities. Meet Rick Price!

Rick Price is the director of the Art Institute including the Summer Art Institute this year! The Summer Art Institute is for artistically motivated teens ages 14-19 to develop their creativity and build skills that prepare them for advanced study and careers in the visual arts. This summer’s focus will be drawing and painting Rick is an Artist from Southern California, living for the last fifteen years in New York’s beautiful and inspiring Hudson Valley. He attended design school at Cal Poly Pomona and received his MFA in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. He has shown various permutations of his work in small galleries and shows in L.A., San Francisco, New York City and the Hudson Valley. More recently his work has been featured in group shows through PoetsArtists at Abend Gallery in Denver, CO and Zhao B. Art Center in Chicago, IL. He is currently the Chair of The Fine Art Department at the Harvey School in Katonah, NY, and has also teaches at the The Art Effect in Poughkeepsie, NY (formerly The Mills Street Loft) since 2010. Trolley Barn Gallery The mission of The Art Effect at the Trolley Barn is to train youth as leaders who catalyze the community through the arts and re-energize downtown Poughkeepsie. The project came about through conversations between Bart Thurber, The Anne Hendricks Bass Director of The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center and Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt, Executive Director of the Art Effect, who share a vision to support the arts in Poughkeepsie. They invited their staff to brainstorm collaborative ways to strengthen The Art Effect’s programming and engage the community with high-caliber arts experiences, while also creating rich educational opportunities. The discussion led to the creation of a new program that would involve a professional curator to guide youth in organizing an exhibition. Reel Exposure International Teen Film and Photography Festival is Coming This April

Reel Exposure International Teen Film and Photography Festival is a 3-day event, April 7 – 9. It includes an in-person (or virtual) photography exhibition opening on April 7 at 5pm at the Trolley Barn Gallery in Poughkeepsie followed by a two-day virtual event at 7pm on April 8 and 9, showcasing short films made by creative young artists from around the world. This year the festival has youth work from nine countries—giving the audience a global teen perspective and celebrating some of the world’s strongest youth art and media! RSVP TODAY!

Opening with a public reception on April 7, this exciting youth exhibition will remain on display through May 13 accompanied by a virtual gallery tour for those unable to attend. About the Film Festival Viewers can expect to see a mix of film genres in this year’s film festival lineup, including animations, documentaries, dramas, horror, and comedies from teen filmmakers. 12 short films will be screened virtually on April 8 & 9, 7PM from a total of 54 submissions from The United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Mexico, China, and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The film portion of the event will conclude with a live virtual awards ceremony and Q&A on April 9. This event is free, however pre-registration is required at thearteffect.org/reel-exposure. Expanding Accessibility For the first time Reel Exposure International Teen Film & Photo festival will utilize open captioning services for film screenings as well as a live remote captioner for the awards and Q&A portion of the event to increase accessibility for the hearing-impaired community.  “There is no doubt that accessibility issues have greatly limited people with hearing loss, including when it comes to the entertainment industry. We strongly believe that everyone should have the right to enjoy a full cultural life and we are excited to extend this access to hearing-impaired audiences, so we can all watch these powerful films together.” Says Executive Director, Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt.  Tickets to the festival are free. The Art Effect officially launched The Trolley Barn Gallery and first youth-led juried exhibition

On February 26, 2021 The Art Effect officially launched The Trolley Barn Gallery and our first youth-led juried exhibition Home Sick with a ribbon cutting and opening reception attended by The Dutchess County Chamber of Commerce, State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, Mayor Rob Rolison, Melaine Rottkamp from Dutchess County Tourism, Christie Bonomo-Gose from Dutchess County planning, as well as board members, staff, Poughkeepsie youth and many artists and community members.

The Art Effect Offers In-Person Summer Programming for Ages 5-19

The Art Effect has once again adapted its summer programming for youth ages 4-19 to reclaim their summer fun while adhering to state and local Coronavirus guidelines. Programs for each age group — Arts Camps (ages 5-11), Junior Arts Institute (ages 11-13), and Summer Art Institute (ages 14-19) — will be available in-person with smaller group sizes and enhanced safety measures to provide social and creative outlets in a supportive environment this summer. For decades, The Art Effect’s summer programs; Dutchess Arts Camp, Junior Art Institute, and Summer Art Institute, have enriched and empowered local youth through art and exploration. This year, The Art Effect will also reinstate Ulster Arts Camp, located on the picturesque campus of SUNY New Paltz for campers ages 5–11. Throughout these unprecedented times, The Art Effect continues to support young people by providing the platform, materials, and direction to continue to stay connected, motivated, and hopeful for the future all while offering safe, in-person programming which has become a model for other organizations throughout the county. At The Art Effect’s summer Dutchess and Ulster arts camps, children ages 5-11 will explore their artistic abilities and have fun working on creative projects in person, socially distanced and outside whenever possible this summer at our Pershing Ave, Poughkeepsie location or at SUNY New Paltz. Dutchess Arts Camp will run for four individual weeks beginning July 5 — July 30. Ulster Arts Camp will run two sessions beginning August 2 — August 13. This summer’s Junior Art Institute will take a child’s love of art to the next level through the discovery of creative self expression while learning new skills in painting, 3-D sculptures, and mixed media. Projects intended for middle school youth ages 11-13 will be adaptable to the level and interest of each student through the “child centered” teaching approach. Junior Art Institute runs five days a week for three individual sessions beginning on July 5 — August 13 at the Barrett Art Center located at 55 Noxon Rd, Poughkeepsie. The Art Effect’s Summer Art Institute is for artistically motivated teens ages 14-19 to develop their creativity and build skills that prepare them for advanced study and careers in the visual arts. This summer’s focus will be drawing and painting and will take place at the Trolley Barn with two sessions from July 5-23 and July 26-August 13 with Art Institute director, Rick Price. Since the COVID pandemic began in March, The Art Effect has pivoted our normal service models to adjust program schedules, provide virtual options and serve more people through an incredible amount of hard work, and creative thinking. During the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Art Effect was one of the only agencies in Poughkeepsie providing services to youth through remote media and visual arts workshops, online courses, and virtual events. The Art Effect to Receive $20,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts!

The Art Effect has been approved for a $20,000 award from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the Art Institute, with a special focus on ArtsBridge, a new program within the Art Institute (piloted for 2 years under the name MAAP). ArtsBridge will engage underserved Poughkeepsie youth in the arts to provide them with training, support, and mentorship to help them succeed in higher education. The Art Effect’s project is among 1,073 projects across America totaling nearly $25 million that were selected during this first round of fiscal year 2021 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects funding category.  “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support this project from The Art Effect,” said Arts Endowment Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “The Art Effect is among the arts organizations across the country that have demonstrated creativity, excellence, and resilience during this very challenging year.”  The Art Institute, a year-long portfolio development and college preparatory program, engages over 200 youth ages 14-19 each year. The Art Effect helps students develop their ideas and master skills in both visual and media arts preparing them for their future college and career paths in the arts. “Since 2000, our graduates have been offered over $50 million in merit-based scholarships to the nation’s leading colleges, universities, and art schools”. Says Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt, Executive Director. “Students in our most advanced programs created 153 portfolios this year and thanks to the support of our funders, sponsors, and community we have been able to provide $17,899.50 in financial assistance scholarships to low-income students, increasing access to arts education in our community.” Responding to the need to interrupt the cycle of poverty and educational inequities in Poughkeepsie, ArtsBridge establishes a pathway for students to higher education through the arts. With the generous support of the NEA grant funding and other supporters, ArtsBridge will implement a comprehensive program in 2021. Participants will gain advanced artistic preparatory and portfolio development skills though the Art Institute as well as college readiness training, and emotional support through individual mentorship with a focus being on college scholarships and matriculation. This spring will also feature guest artists, exposing youth to a variety of college and career fields. While programs at The Art Effect took a significant hit due to the pandemic last year, with lots of time, talent, hard work, and creative thinking we continue to offer high-quality arts and college prep courses for young people throughout the Hudson Valley. Spring and summer classes are planned for in-person instruction beginning this month.
