The Art Effect Listens For Good
When The Art Effect, which participates in Shared Insight’s Listen4Good initiative, analyzed student feedback data along with demographic information, we saw and acted on opportunities to improve our cultural competencies and the inclusiveness of our art and college-prep classes. The feedback process changed the perspectives and led to new programming, like the Media & Arts Advancement Program (MAAP), that has given students a better chance to fully benefit from The Art Effect’s offerings.

How Art Can Battle Pollution
Check out this awesome, short video produced by our MADLab (Media/Art/Design Lab) students! These PSAs (public service announcements) are part of the community-led initiative to clean up the Fall Kill Creek in downtown Poughkeepsie. Students engaged in the summer MADLab program will design and install public art installations, organize litter clean up days, and create anti-littering education materials, such as these PSAs. Watch the video, then take a 6-question survey below the video! Please take this 6-question survey based on the video above! In 2019, MADLab students are taking on the ravages of pollution in their community. As part of the NYS Pollution Prevention Institute, students will create public art and develop clean green spaces along the Fall Kill Creek, an overlooked waterway in downtown Poughkeepsie. This is the only youth-led arts project that contributes to the city-wide goal of improving the Fall Kill Creek. The Art Effect hopes to raise $10,000 in support of the program. Funds raised will provide youth with the resources to design and install public art sculptures, organize litter clean-up days, create anti-littering educational materials such as video and radio public service announcements, and host community feedback and outreach sessions. In the process, youth participating in the program will gain useful job skills in areas such as photography, video, landscape design, sanitation, construction, graphic design, radio broadcasting, and community organizing. Community members interested in supporting the efforts of students can make a donation between now and May 15th through our fundraising campaign, and after May 15th through our website. Students interested in participating in the program should register for our summer program, MADLabs. The Art Effect's 2018 Annual Report

Friday afternoon, The Art Effect received a $1,000 grant from The Poughkeepsie Awesome Foundation at our studios in The Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory. These generous funds will support increased participation by Poughkeepsie youth in the annual Exposure national high school photography competition. The Exposure exhibition is a unique opportunity to showcase the talented photography of local and national high school students, nurturing and giving attention to young people’s creative voice. Emerging photographers have the chance to share their unique perspective on the world through incredible images, from classic black-and-white darkroom photography to digitally manipulated images. The exhibition is one of very few juried student photography exhibitions in the Hudson Valley. Professional photographers judge over 750 entries from across the USA and choose approximately 70 pieces for the Poughkeepsie-based exhibition and select winners of several prizes, including a full scholarship to the Summer Art Intensive at The Art Effect, one full-tuition scholarship to Maryland Institute College of Art’s Summer 2019 pre-college program, and cash awards. The Poughkeepsie Awesome Foundation support will enable Poughkeepsie high school students to enter the competition for free and encourage their participation through event attendance. Poughkeepsie youth in The Art Effect’s after school arts and workforce development programs, Spark Studios and Media, Art, and Design Lab (MADLab), will be encouraged to use The Art Effect’s studio equipment and mentors to create photography to be considered for the Exposure exhibition. This funding has provided these students with an opportunity to compete in this national photography competition. “On behalf of The Art Effect and our students, we would like to thank the Poughkeepsie Awesome Foundation for this generous grant,” states Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt, Executive Director of The Art Effect. “These funds will make the Exposure exhibition more accessible and encourage larger participation and voice from young artists in the City of Poughkeepsie.” The deadline for submissions to Exposure is Friday, April 5, 2019 at 5pm. Entries can be submitted via our website, and Poughkeepsie students can enter for free with the code PKawesome. The Exposure exhibition will held in Poughkeepsie and open to the public in May 2019.MADLab
