An advanced mentoring and portfolio development course designed to help earn top scholarship awards by developing a strong body of artwork. Senior Project is open to all aspiring art students in their senior or junior year or in a post-high school gap year. Students will complete 10 pieces of artwork, as well as a visual research sketchbook that reflects a deeper understanding of learned concepts. A new, finished piece will be expected at every class for critique as well as the previous week’s piece after applying feedback. Once completed you will exhibit your work at a public gallery event, be given letters of recommendation from the instructor, and direct assistance applying to the colleges of your choice.

​​Registrants will be contacted to schedule a meeting with the instructor prior to the first day to review the course commitments as well as the registrant's current portfolio. Interview meetings are anticipated to occur on Sept 1st and will be scheduled on an individual basis.

Students will be required to develop 2 proposals for conceptual themes for their body of course work prior to the first day.

Students are required to bring a 9”x12” sketchbook.

MADLab Spring Session

Please note preference for our youth employment programs is given to Dutchess County residents.

Media/Art/Design Lab (MADLab) is an "earn while you learn" arts-based career and skills training program that trains youth in:

  • visual art and graphic design skills
  • social media marketing skills
  • public art project management skills

Trolley Barn Youth Curatorial Team Spring 2022

Have you ever wondered what happens at a museum or gallery? Curious about what a Curator does or how exhibitions are created? The Trolley Barn Youth Curatorial Team is a new program at The Art Effect's Trolley Barn Gallery that gives you a stipend to create exhibition themes, review and select artworks, and curate how the community interacts with the artwork in the Trolley Barn Gallery. Team members have the opportunity to work alongside professional curators from world-class museums and get hands-on experience working in a gallery setting. This program will prepare you for your first museum or gallery job, and a great experience to add to your resume. 

PKX Festival Youth Committee

Learn how to cultivate community partners, market a brand, engage Poughkeepsie youth and residents, and curate the first ever PKX Fesitval! The PKX Youth Committee will earn a stipend as the primary planners and developers of the PKX Festival, to be held at the Trolley Barn on Main Street in September 2022. 

Youth will work closely with the city, local artists, stakeholders and community partners as they learn about community organizing, art and nonprofit administration, civil service, and public speaking. Committee members will also attend a mandatory Spring Break intensive, which includes a trip to NYC to work closely with the Festival Featured Artist: BoogieRez.

If you have a deep love for the arts, the City of Poughkeepsie and you want to bring the community together, this is the place for you!

Summer Art Institute – Session 2 – Drawing & Painting Major

Excel your artistic knowledge, techniques, and studio practices by learning from a supportive and knowledgeable team of Teaching Artists. Share this experience with other like minded individuals who have their sights set on pursuing a career in the arts. Emerge with an impressive portfolio including both digital and fine art that highlight a strengthened understanding of color theory, composition, narrative, creative intention, and more. Create a balance between an observational and conceptual style with a strong focus on how to design pieces to include your personal voice. Develop an advanced artistic vocabulary and receive constructive critique on your work from peers and teaching artists. You will have a hand in curating, hanging, and presenting your sessions’ artwork for the Final Showcase art exhibition where your family and friends are invited to celebrate your work.

Students can choose between three majors:

  • Drawing & Painting – Intermediate artists ready to begin their journey in portfolio development will receive guidance in what colleges look for in a strong portfolio and how to begin to develop pieces with foundational techniques using various paints, inks, charcoals, pastels, and more. 
  • Digital Art & Illustration – Intermediate and advanced digital artists will focus on broadening your knowledge about digital tools, resources, and programs to take your work to the next level. Utilize these skills to create stunning original digital illustrations, paintings, animations, and photo manipulations. 
  • Advanced Drawing & Painting – Advanced level, dedicated students ready to strengthen their artistic knowledge will dive deeper into advanced artistic techniques, practices, and principals. Expand your skills and portray how you see the world using various paints, ink, charcoals, pastels, and more. Advanced Drawing and Painting students will receive a portfolio review from esteemed colleges and learn about the programs they offer.

    Spark Studios Spring Session

    Spark Studios is a filmmaking and videography program for youth interested in developing their film production and professional skills including:

    • working with clients on commercial videos
    • bringing a creative vision to life across stages of production

    Portfolio Development Foundations

    Learn what it takes to start advancing beyond art basics and begin building a scholarship-worthy portfolio. You will become proficient in drawing and painting human anatomy, proportions, landscapes, still lifes, and more, while learning to draw from observation and creating original works that blend the observation with the imagination. This class will prepare students for advanced classes such as Intermediate Portfolio and other specialty Portfolio classes.

    Students are required to bring a 9”x12” sketchbook.

    Portfolio in the Human Figure

    A functional understanding of anatomy, gesture, and proportion is the foundation of any figural artwork. This class will help your portfolio stand out by learning to draw the human figure. Using a variety of materials and techniques, students will gain confidence in mark-making and grounding figures in dynamic compositions while working from a live nude model. You will develop an advanced understanding of how to render the human form while focusing on human anatomy, proportions, poses, and gestures.
    Students are required to bring 9”x12” sketchbooks.

    Portfolio in Character Design & Comics

    Design and tell your own visual story panel by panel using traditional materials such as bristol board, pencils, tracing paper, sable brushes, and india ink. Referencing film, video, comic books and comic strips, you will learn how to break down ideas into the "keyframes" to create your story. Learn how to create pages within the ‘Elements of Art’ including line quality, shading, variety, emphasis, and perspective.

    Students are required to bring 9”x12” sketchbooks.
