Become proficient in drawing and painting the basics of human anatomy, proportions, landscapes, still lifes, and more, while learning to draw from observation as well as to create original work that blends the observational with the imaginative. Learn what you need to get beyond basics and begin building a scholarship-worthy portfolio. This class will prepare you for more advanced classes such as Intermediate Portfolio and other specialty Portfolio classes.

Intermediate Portfolio Development

Refine your observation and rendering skills to create a sophisticated fine art portfolio! You will learn a variety of different mediums and hear from working artists who are experts in each field. You will begin by working from observation using the tools of drawing and painting, and then move onto mixed media, sculpture, photography, and experimental works. Your focus will be on using new and familiar tools to produce innovative work that solidifies your personal vision and vice. This class will prepare you for the rigors of Advanced Portfolio Development.

Portfolio in Digital Art and Graphic Design: Session 2

Already understand the fundamentals of drawing and painting? Want to level up your skills by exploring digital tools? Then this class is the perfect fit for you. Through self-portraits, personal landscapes, cartoon-ish stylizations, texture mapping, and surreal image-making, students will gain a strong understanding of how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to express their creativity while also enhancing their ability to control and manipulate the basic elements of art in the digital world.

Portfolio in Photography & Documentary Film

Gain mastery in the tools of digital multimedia creation, including photography, capturing video, non-linear editing, and podcast production! In this class, you’ll add depth and conceptual texture to your portfolio by learning how to produce works which span a multitude of digital media formats. You’ll learn how to use single lens reflex 35mm digital cameras, including how to use a light meter and different focal length lenses. You’ll also gain skills in professional lighting for both still photography and video shoots, as well as audio production, video production and editing, and digital image editing to create works that manipulate audio visual, and time-based elements while also creating a dynamic and impressive multimedia portfolio for yourself as an artist.

Summer Art Institute – Session 1 In Person

The Art Effect’s Summer Art Institute (SAI) is for artistically motivated teens ages 14-19 to develop their creativity and build skills that prepare them for advanced artistic study and careers in the visual arts. This summer will be taught by Rick Price, Director of the Summer Art Institute, and the focus will be drawing and painting.

(ArtsBridge Requisite Course)

Senior Project

An advanced mentoring and portfolio development course designed to help earn top scholarship awards by developing a strong body of artwork. It must be taken in conjunction with Road to Scholarships (at no additional cost). Students will complete 10 pieces of artwork, as well as a visual research sketchbook that reflects a deeper understanding of learned concepts. A new, finished piece will be expected every class for critique as well as the previous week’s piece after applying feedback. Once completed you will be given letters of recommendation from the instructor, direct assistance applying to the colleges of your choice, and the opportunity to exhibit your work at a public gallery event.

 

Registrants will be contacted to schedule a meeting with instructor Rick Price prior to the first day to review the course commitments as well as the registrant's current portfolio. Students will be required to develop 2 proposals for conceptual themes for their body of course work prior to the first day.

 

Portfolio in Film & Photo

Students will be pushed to develop their  own visual storytelling style by mastering digital photography and videography. Learn how to use single lens reflex 35mm digital cameras, light meters, and different focal length lenses. Also learn how to write a script, prepare and conduct professional interviews, and edit using Premiere Pro. Students will create a comprehensive photography portfolio and an original short film.
