Senior Project is the most rigorous course currently offered at the Art Institute, the capstone of The Art Effect’s portfolio development programming.
Modeled after a senior thesis college course, students work on a theme for 12 weeks with an artist/mentor. Students present a new work each week along with touch-ups made to the work from the previous week, generally completing the program with a body of work comprised of 12 pieces.The Senior Project exhibition is a celebration of the accomplishments of these young artists.

Teen Visions at The Barns Art Center!

Teen Visions is moving from The Trolley Barn Gallery to The Barns Art Center Oct 9-Dec 10  The Teen Visions show is moving from The Trolley Barn Gallery, to The Barns Art Center in Hopewell Junction, NY! Be sure to check out this artwork presented in this incredible new space. The show will be up from Oct 9 -Dec 10. The Teen Visions show is a culmination of the hard work the youth from summer classes at Media, Arts, and Design Lab, SPARK Studios, Junior Art Institute and Summer Art Institute. The show is made up of pieces from these  programs, which you can learn more about here. Be sure to check out our Teen Visions Virtual Gallery that is currently live if you are not able to see the show in person! . The Barns Art Center and  Harvest Festival Info: The Barns is a contemporary art initiative that highlights art and artists in dialogue with food, farming, ecology, and sustainability. The Barns Art Center is also having their first annual Harvest Festival October 9 & 10. Be sure to sign up on their website to take part in these fun events or just check out the space!

Teen Visions 2021 showcases an incredible summer

Over 90 people joined us at the Trolley Barn Gallery for The Art Effect’s Teen Visions in-person opening last Friday, September 10, 2021, where members of the community, young artists and their families, and The Art Effect staff celebrated an incredible showcase of work from the summer. The show features over 70 pieces of artwork by teen artists from a number of different summer programs at The Art Effect, including Spark Studios, MADLab, the Junior Art Institute, and the Summer Art Institute.

Remarks from Executive Director Nicole Fenichel-Hewitt and program heads David Wong, Paul Thompson, Rick Price, and Michael Hollick highlighted the creative journeys youth undertake in The Art Effect’s programs each summer. Artists from each program spoke briefly about their personal experiences and takeaways from their summers making art. The Teen Vision Virtual Artist Talk will feature a more in depth Q&A with artists from the showcase on September 29 from 7–8pm. Simultaneously on display at The Trolley Barn Gallery through October 2, Mary Haddad’s Black Lives Matter mural was also highlighted at the Teen Visions opening when Mary Haddad spoke about the genesis of the mural and working with teens at Oakwood Friends School this past year on its creation. Teen Visions will remain up on view through October 2, 2021 with gallery hours during the week and each weekend. The gallery is open Wednesday through Friday from 2–5pm and on Saturdays from 12 to 4pm. Media Maker Lab Opens at Poughkeepsie High School

The Art Effect will be at Poughkeepsie High School this fall in the new Media Maker Lab creating a media education resource and classroom focused on providing digital literacy instruction to PHS students and media-related professional development for PHS faculty and staff.


This fall The Art Effect will working in the classroom with the students and faculty in ELA classes to create media texts in dialogue with The Best We Could Do, Thi Bui’s award-winning graphic novel (this year’s selection for the Poughkeepsie Public Library District’s 2021 Big Read).


The Art Effect will also be offering an Animation Lab on Mondays from 3-5pm this fall. PHS youth will have the chance to get animated, mastering various animation techniques including digital animation and stop-motion in this once-a-week after-school program using apps like KomaKoma, Procreate, and Flip-A-Clip. PCSD students can sign up by filling out this form online.
